About this Site

AmericasLibrary.kids.us wants kids to have fun with history while learning at the same time. History isn't just a collection of facts - it's a story, and a pretty exciting one at that.

The materials on this web site come from the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the largest library in the world. Along with books there are letters, diaries, records and tapes, films, sheet music, maps, prints, photographs and digital materials - actual artifacts of the American story.

Teachers call these "primary sources." Not just the words of the Declaration of Independence, for example, but actual handwritten drafts from Thomas Jefferson that reveal what went through his mind as he was writing this most important document.

AmericasLibrary.kids.us uses these primary sources to create interactive, thought-provoking games and activities for kids.

You can also visit the Library of Congress web site (www.loc.gov) and link to "America's Library" for more activities geared to children and "American Memory" to browse our complete online collections of Americana.
